Comprehension is taught throughout our school to ensure that skills of understanding are taught alongside decoding.

EYFS – At Calverton Primary School we teach discreet comprehension sessions from Reception; we focus on the early comprehension skills which are essential for Early Years;

​1 – Ability to Identify Main Idea & Key Details.

2 – Ability to Sequence a Passage into an Ordinal Series.

3 – Ability to Answer Direct Recall Questions.

4 – Ability to Make Inferences and/or Predictions.

5 – Identify Unfamiliar Vocabulary.

All key skills for comprehension are covered across the year and embedded across the curriculum. Our comprehension coverage map shows progression.  Activities are derived from Scholfield and Sims early Comprehension books. An overview of comprehension can be found here:

KS1 – In KS1 comprehension is delivered 3 times a week for 10 minutes. The programme for comprehension in KS1 is built across 2 weeks and follows the same skills as identified in EYFS

1 – Ability to Identify Main Idea & Key Details.

The extracts for these sessions have been chosen by leaders to drive challenge and ambition in the comprehension session. The progression of extracts can be found below:

KS2 – Across KS2 we use a model based on reciprocal reading to deliver high quality comprehension lessons. Comprehension is delivered for 30 minutes every day. Reciprocal reading is a well-researched method used to develop learners’ reading skills, promote higher order thinking, develop listening and talking, and ensure access to the curriculum for all learners. Its aims are to:

  1. improve reading comprehension through the use of four reading strategies:
    predicting, questioning, clarifying and summarising
  2. enable pupils to reflect on their reading and develop higher order thinking skills
  3. use the social nature of learning to improve reading comprehension
