Reading

Calverton Primary School > Learning > Reading

Throughout the school we aim that children will:

  • be able to enjoy books and other written media
  • to access information in all curriculum areas
  • to read easily and fluently, with expression, independently, with peers and in groups
  • be able to follow instructions in all curriculum areas and the environment around
    them
  • to read a wide selection o literature at home and at school for pleasure
  • to give considered opinion concerning texts read, based upon evidence

The 2014 Curriculum divides reading skills into two dimensions:

  • Word reading/ decoding
  • Comprehension

In addition to our systematic phonics programme, guided comprehension sessions and
English lessons we complete a number of additional activities to support a culture of reading
across the school. Some of these include:

  • shared and guided reading across the curriculum
  • opportunities are utilised across the curriculum to model reading – all adults are part of
this modelling and all parts of the school day, including assemblies by SLT.
  • opportunities for ‘storytelling’ —–active listening, a climate of ‘reading for pleasure’ and
an opportunity for children to listen to recommended books that may be otherwise ‘out of
    reach’.
  • vocabulary walls are built in all areas of learning and children are expected to ‘magpie’
the ideas from their reading to be used in their own writing
  • assessment tracking by leaders ensures that children have opportunities to read 1:1 to
    increase fluency if needed
  • children take home a book daily, which they are encouraged to share with their parents
    and complete reading journal activities
  • all classes are encouraged to visit the school library to enjoy the excitement of this central
area and the social engagement that reading can bring
  • reading opportunities extends into all areas of the school day and there is a lot of
opportunities for children to practice their reading with peers and families
  • subject leaders regularly engage with families to help prioritise reading. They do this by
organising: book days, storytelling events, authors in the school and book fairs

Here is the letter that was sent home to explain our home reading system for families with
their children.
